Place the sheetrock patch into hole and against the support boards. Secure the patch with sheetrock screws. Set the screws so that the heads are slightly below the outer surface of the sheetrock, but try not to break the paper surface with the screw heads

Back

Place self sticking  fiber mesh joint tape over the joints .You can "butt" the tape in the corners as shown in the lower right corner (for a less protrusive repair). Or you can "over lap" the tape in the corners (for more strength). Paper joint tape can also be used but it would have to be stuck on with joint compound.

The idea when applying join compound is to build up enough of a surface to cover the tape, and yet still appear flat .

Apply 1st coat of joint compound. Appling a thin coat over the tape as shown , using a 6 or 9 inch broad knife (Joint Knife).  Allow to dry.  Check for any high ridges that may be in the compound and sand them off with a 120 grit sandpaper or a sanding block.

Apply the second coat of joint compound using a wide joint knife. Spread the compound out father with each coat. You may need to go well over a foot out from each seam with the compound. Use a thin coat. Allow to dry. Again : sand off any ridges and, then you will probably have to apply a 3rd coat of joint compound.
